What You'll Need

  • 1–2 tsp ceremonial grade matcha
  • 2 oz hot water (175°F / 80°C)
  • 6–8 oz cold milk (oat milk is the top choice)
  • Ice + optional sweetener (honey, simple syrup)

Step 1 — Sift and Whisk the Matcha

Sift 1–2 tsp of ceremonial matcha into a bowl. Add 2 oz of hot water at 175°F — never boiling. Whisk vigorously in a W-motion for 20–30 seconds until smooth, bright green, and frothy. Add sweetener now while still warm so it dissolves fully.

Step 2 — Fill a Glass with Ice

Pack a tall glass generously with ice. Use large cubes if possible — they melt slower and keep your latte from getting watered down.

Step 3 — Pour Cold Milk Over the Ice

Pour 6–8 oz of cold milk over the ice first. Oat milk is the crowd favorite — its natural sweetness complements matcha's earthy bitterness perfectly.

Step 4 — Pour Matcha Over the Milk

Slowly pour whisked matcha over the back of a spoon held just above the milk. This creates the stunning dark green layer floating on top of the white milk. Don't stir yet — let your guests admire it first.

Step 5 — Stir and Enjoy

Stir gently to combine into one smooth, bright green drink. Sip through a straw for the full layered experience.

Pro Tips

  • 🌿 Ceremonial grade matcha only — culinary grade turns muddy brown-green with milk
  • 🥫 Oat milk is the #1 pairing — its sweetness balances matcha's grassy notes naturally
  • ✔️ Always whisk matcha with hot water first — cold water will not dissolve it properly
  • 📸 For the perfect photo: let layers settle 5 seconds before shooting
