The French press makes one of the richest, most full-bodied cups you can brew at home. No paper filters, no machines, no waste — just coarsely ground coffee steeped directly in hot water, then pressed clean. More oils and depth than any drip machine can produce.
What You'll Need
- A French press (any size — 8oz to 32oz)
- Coarsely ground coffee
- Hot water at 200°F (just off the boil)
- A timer + stirring spoon
Step 1 — Preheat the French Press
Pour hot water into the empty press to warm it, then discard. Prevents temperature drop and keeps your coffee hot longer.
Step 2 — Measure Your Coffee
Use 1g coffee to 15g water. For a 12oz press, that's about 23g (4 tablespoons) of coarsely ground coffee. Grind coarse — similar to rough sea salt.
Step 3 — Add Coffee and Hot Water
Add grounds to the press. Pour all hot water (200°F) in one pour, saturating all grounds. Give a quick stir to break up dry clumps. Place the plunger lid on top but do not press yet.
Step 4 — Steep for 4 Minutes
Set a timer for exactly 4 minutes. Under 3 minutes = weak and sour. Over 5 minutes = over-extracted and bitter.
Step 5 — Press Slowly and Steadily
At 4 minutes, press the plunger down with slow, even pressure over 20–30 seconds. Too easy = grind too coarse. Near impossible = too fine. Perfect resistance = perfect brew.
Step 6 — Pour Immediately
Pour all the coffee out immediately after pressing. Coffee left sitting on the grounds continues to extract and turns bitter within minutes.
Pro Tips
- ☕ Grind coarse — the most common French press mistake is grinding too fine
- ⏱ Stick to exactly 4 minutes every time — consistency is everything
- 🌰 Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Yemeni Mocha shine brilliantly in the French press
- 🍫 The natural oils preserved by French press give a richness that paper-filtered methods strip away
